For the past 6 years flag football has had a presence at the Super Bowl during the Celebrity Flag Football Challenge. The fairly new tradition will continue with its 7th annual game the day before Super Bowl XLII in Tampa Bay, Florida.
The event is one of countless pregame events taking place on Sat. January 31, 2009 to hype the championship NFL game that will take the worldwide stage the following evening. Last year’s game in Surprise, AZ was part of an elaborate schedule of events including a tournament hosted by a local adult flag football league AZ “Goin” Deep. The rosters for the annual game include former NFL players, current players, and other players each year. In 2008 players included: Doug Flutie; Neil Rackers (Arizona Cardinal); Darnell Docket (Arizona Cardinal); Chad Johnson; Alan Branch (Arizona Cardinal); Eric Green (Arizona Cardinal); Kenoy Kennedy; Eddie Drummond; Willis McGahee; Kasim Osgood; Lance Briggs; Glenn Holt; Travis Fisher; Marshawn Lynch; Chris Cooper (Arizona Cardinal); Chris Harris; Drayton Florence; Derrick Johnson; Rock Cartwright; Derek Hagan (ASU All Time Leading Receiver); Andre Hall; Otis Wilson; Greg Townsend; DMC (Rapper); Quinn Gray; and Tae Bo Master - “Billy Blanks”. At the end of this NFL season, the official flag football event of the super bowl will be sponsored by Circuit City and will surely draw a host of current and former players excited to get out on the turf to play flag. While the list of who is participating has not been released, ticket sales have already started for the gathering of past and present NFL players and celebrities on St. Pete’s beach. This event is great exposure for the game of flag football as it will be televised on local TV and expected crowds for the event are around 10,000.
